Budapest Entry Fee Summary 2012

The new season has begun already.

Here is some useful entry information for Budapest tournaments if you are considering a visit. Usually I play in the non-First Saturday(FS) RRs, the game/day opens and as many of the small 90/game opens as physically possible as the events are truly bargain priced.

All tournaments have modest prizes(except FS) but usually no-one is entering as a professional player to make money.

I won the Siralyi Open a couple of times and the prize included a bottle of wine from the sponsor.

Key information is at the Hungarian Federation tournament listing Chess.hu

These are the hidden bargains of Budapest. Imagine a nice RR for under 20 EUR just waiting to be found. Usually I am the only foreign player playing.

Kobanya Open 2012-12 14-16th

Another nice Budapest weekend tournament starts today. This is a typcial 90-90 6-round open with modest prizes. The tournament is organized by the Kobanya Sport Club KobanyaSC.hu. This is how Hungarian kids get introduced to chess-through clubs-and they get their initial taste of tournaments in small tournaments like these.

Budapest RR Prices(1 Game/Day) Non-Norm Tournaments

Budapest offers a wide variety of RR tournaments to choose from for non-norm seekers. The prices are quite close together for non-monthly tournaments. These are good value and are the ones I seek out to play in.

First Saturday has a long runnning a monthly series priced at a premium rate.

Budapest at night

Budapest(Non-Monthly) [See-Hungarian Chess Federation Tournament Listing-chess.hu]
Finding these tournaments is not obvious for foreign players, but now I have the hang of it. The trick is to find the general tournament listing of the Hungarian Chess Federation and follow the breadcrumbs to the indvidual advertisement(usually in Hungarian) and then decipher them. The cheap prices make it worth the effort.

I played in all the following this past year. The Amator Cup was held in the downtown Hungarian Federation builiding. I liked this one best of all. It was a strange feeling to be the only foreign player, but I had the consolation of being the top-rated player.

Local Player Rates
Hungarian players pay a standard unadvertised entry fee of 12,000HUF which is still very expensive by local standards(a monthly transit pass is 9,800HUF).

HUFEURUSDCAN
12,00042.4555.4155.13

Foreign players living in the city who know this rate also get this rate. Incoming foreign player tourists are usually unaware of this pricing practive. It took me a year to find out this key piece of information in late 2009.  Also note that FS prices are negotiable at all levels, you just have to know this in advance.

Conclusions
Usually for RR tournaments I expect to be paying in the 20EUR(25CAD/25USD) range and always for prizes(which are quite modest). FS falls far outside of this range and offer no prizes so I don't play in their events.

There are many bargain level tournaments in all formats(RRs, opens and weekenders)  in Budapest. The key is to know where to look.

The Bargain Chess of Budapest

I love the chess in Budapest. Especially the prices. The key is to how to find the events.

Beautiful Budapest

The most important resource is the Hungarian Chess Federation Tournament Listing Chess.hu.
From there you have to decipher to Hungarian language advertisements (or email the contact for an English version and hope for some luck).

My favorite event of 2012 was the Budapest Open sarkanydse Budapest Open/GM/IM which was played along the strongest GM tournament of the year in Budapest and an IM norm tournament.

By luck, I also met organizers of the Budapest Team Championship and was invited to play on the Rakosligeti team(RAC). This is my third season with the RAC team.

Here is a summary of the events I played in for 2012 so far. Usually I play in everything humanly possible except First Saturday(FS). I took part in 9 FS RRs in 2009 but have since not participated. FS prices are out of line with the market, of which I was not aware of at the time. Also FS does not offer prizes, as is usual in all other tournaments here.

One Game Per Day RR Events
I played 5 RR events this year. These were gruelling events not usually available in Canada. The CAN$18-25 range should make Canadian players take notice. However, they are not easy to play in and demand an intense level of energy. First Saturday also has a monthly series of RR events. See their program Firstsaturday 2012_2013.
